Super Bowl games are always the best time to advertise your companies product. Motorola decided to bust out their new Android Tablet commercial this past Super Bowl which in my opinion turned out great (I'm a huge android fan). After checking out the link you'll quickly notice that everyone dressed in white is obviously an Apple user and the guy who isn’t is the Motorola user. Everyone in white appears to be under some spell which is making them behave like emotionless Robots. In comes the Motorola guy. This fellow walks freely and purposely. Motorola guy notices a girl in the elevator he decides to use his Motorola tablet to create a video for her. When his project is complete he shows her the video and she instantly awakens from her state of unconsciousness. They leave the drone community immediately after her awakening.
Motorola is pretty much stating that Apple is holding everyone under a spell. The only way to break the spell and be set FREE is to get their android tablet. If you don’t see this then re-watch the video and look for the scene where Motorola guy is reading a book on his tablet. The book he’s reading is George Orwell’s “1984”. Convinced yet? I thought so.
The funny thing I noticed about the Motorola video was its similarity to most of Apples commercials attacking Microsoft. These commercials also want you to be set FREE from something. In this case it’s being set FREE from all the problems or lack of useful tools Microsoft has. I found a video that has about 15 ads in which Apple is convincing you to FREE yourself from Microsoft. The first ad shown shows how Microsoft is limited in its functionality. Apple is able to hook up with a Japanese video camera and speak fluently with it. As this is happening, Microsoft is oblivious to what is going on, appearing limited to what Apple can do. FREE yourself from Microsoft and join Apple if you want to have the ability to do more.
Considering that I am not much of an Apple fan, I think these ads are genius. They are catchy, and to be honest, make me feel as if I might need to FREE myself and join the better world that is Apple.
FREE yourself again from what your device cannot do! Sounds repetitive, because it is! This time this message is given from DROID to consumers about iPhone. Everything your iPhone can’t do, your DROID can. The commercial is catchy because at first it appears to be an iPhone commercial with its lively music and white screens, but after reading the text we quickly notice that it is someone dissing iPhone. At the end of the video the white screen is replaced with a dark screen with red letters. DROID. This is definitely an intense video. Again we see the theme of being set FREE. DROID wants us to be set FREE from iPhone lack of functionality and join the better team. Anything iPhone can do DROID can do better? That’s the message I get from this advertisement.
FREEDOM was quite clear in all of these advertisements. Each video had different topics they wanted you to be set FREE from, but ultimately, FREEDOM from the competitors product was the goal.
